Downsizing your home can feel overwhelming, but with a little planning and some simple strategies, it can also be a rewarding way to prepare for the next chapter of your life. Here are some practical tips to help you simplify your space without the stress.

Start Early

Nobody wants to feel rushed when deciding what’s important and what’s not. Start the process early so you have plenty of time to sort through your belongings thoughtfully (and take breaks when you need them!).

Take it Room by Room

If you start sorting through your bedroom and then jump to the kitchen or basement before finishing, your house could end up looking like a department store on Black Friday. Focus on one space at a time to keep things organized and make the process more manageable.

Use the “Four-Box” Method

Label boxes as “Keep,” “Donate,” “Sell,” or “Trash.” This will help you stay organized and will help prevent you from accidently sorting through the same pile of items four times because it’s just sitting on the table.

Keep What You Love & Need

We’re all guilty of holding onto something because “maybe one day I’ll need it.” (Spoiler alert: we probably won’t.) A good rule of thumb - if you haven’t used it in the past year, it’s probably safe to let it go.

Make Peace with What You Can’t Take

The hard truth is there will be items you want to keep but simply can’t. Consider your options: Can you store it in a storage unit? Does a family member want it? Can you take a piece of it with you? (For example, if you have a large wooden table, keep a piece of the wood as a keepsake.)

Be Kind to Yourself

Downsizing is an emotional process that takes both physical and mental energy. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it, and give yourself grace along the way. Remember, you’re creating space for the next chapter of your life, and that’s something to be proud of.
